The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has held a farewell parade for members of the Jamaica Ghana Engineers Company 1 (GHANENGR COY 1) at the Jubilee Lounge, Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday 17 December 2025.
The Reviewing Officer, the President and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of GAF, John Dramani Mahama, commended the 9 Officers and forty-five (45) soldiers selected for a humanitarian reconstruction mission in Jamaica for their professionalism, discipline and readiness to serve.
President Mahama emphasised the importance of raising the flag Ghana high, underscoring the commitment to international solidarity, humanitarian assistance and global responsibility.
He noted that the decision to provide support followed a direct request from Jamaican Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, who indicated that the damage exceeded Jamaica’s capacity to repair alone.
The C-in-C extended his gratitude to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, as well as the US government and its people, for facilitating the mission through the provision of C-17 aircraft to transport the troops from Ghana to Kingston.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment comprising engineers, masons, carpenters and various technical experts, would assist in constructing shelters for the displaced Jamaicans.
Chargé d’Affaires ad Interim at the US Embassy, His Excellency Rolf Olson highlighted the significance of partnership, affirming that President Trump and the U.S. government would provide necessary support to those affected by Hurricane Melissa.
