Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, is set to officially file his nomination papers January 27, 2026 as he bids to contest the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary in Ayawaso East.
The primary is scheduled for February 7, 2026, as part of preparations for the by-election slated for March 3, following the death of the constituency’s former MP, Mahama Naser Toure.
Baba Jamal, who has been serving as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, announced earlier that he has taken a 10-day leave from his diplomatic duties to focus on his parliamentary bid. He dismissed calls for his resignation from his diplomatic post, emphasizing that he would relinquish his position only if he is successful in the primary election.

He is one of six aspirants vying for the NDC nomination in the primary. The others include the party’s constituency chairman Mohammed Ramme, Hajia Amina Adam (widow of the late MP), Dr Yakubu Azindow, Najib Mohammed Sani, and Salam Daru.
According to the Party, nomination process closed on January 24, with aspirants now preparing to submit their forms on January 27 at the regional office.
The Ayawaso East seat became vacant after the sudden death of Mahama Naser Toure on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness. Parliament subsequently declared the seat vacant, prompting the Electoral Commission to organize a by-election to fill the vacancy.
