Government will introduce a Bill to rename Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport to honour the Land Owners, The Gas.
The proposed change aims to reflect Ghana’s democratic values, sparking debate about the country’s history and legacy.
The airport, originally named Accra International Airport, was renamed in 1969 to honor Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, who led the 1966 coup that overthrew Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. The renaming has been a subject of controversy, with some arguing it glorifies a painful chapter in Ghana’s history.
The Transport Minister is expected to present the Accra International Airport Bill to Parliament, alongside other bills, including the Maritime Offences Bill and Road Traffic Bill, focusing on regulating commercial motorcycle operations.
