President John Dramani Mahama exchanges new year greetings with Diplomatic Corps

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday 10th February, 2026 hosted Members of the Diplomatic Corps at the Presidency for the annual exchange of New Year Greetings.

Addressing the Members of the Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency the President extended best wishes through them to their Heads of State and Government and their respective countries for the year 2026. Emphasising the relevance of diplomacy, he underscored that it remains the most reliable and credible pathway for dialogue and collective action. He highlighted that the foreign policy of Ghana continues to be guided by democracy, respect for human rights, the rule of law and inclusive sustainable development. He added that Ghana stands ready to contribute meaningfully to a just, stable and prosperous global order.

His Excellency the President informed that Ghana had made strides in restoring macroeconomic stability, citing fiscal discipline which has contributed to the reduction of inflation, stabilisation the national currency and improve trade balance. He outlined initiatives being undertaken by his administration to further promote growth including the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board, the Big Push Infrastructure Agenda, 24-Hour Economy policy and the implementation of the Mahama Cares Programme.

He added that in strengthening bilateral relations, Ghana signed labour mobility agreements with a number of countries and also secured visa waiver agreements aimed at boosting trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

His Excellency the President emphasised that Ghana believes in finding African solutions to African problems and reaffirmed the commitment of the country to regional integration, good neighbourliness, among others. He noted that he would continue to leverage on his position as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues; African Union Financial Institutions; as well as Reparations to advance Pan-African ideals. He announced that Ghana would table a resolution at the United Nations to recognise the transatlantic slave trade as the greatest crime against humanity and called on the international community for support towards its adoption.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) in his remarks, expressed appreciation to the Diplomatic Corps for their continued engagement and support and further noted that their work remains a vital bridge between Ghana and the rest of the world. He reiterated the commitment of Ghana to good neighbourliness, regional integration, economic diplomacy, multilateralism and South–South cooperation as key pillars in advancing national development and shared global prosperity. He also highlighted the leadership role of Ghana within the African Union in advocating for empowerment, financial sovereignty, health sovereignty, as well as regional security and cooperation.

On her part, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Imane Quaadil in her remarks congratulated Ghana for its peaceful democratic transition and described Ghana as a beacon of democracy in Africa. She applauded Ghana for its diplomacy, with regard to high-level engagements at multilateral fora and strategic high-level visits that have strengthened partnerships. She further commended Ghana for its leadership in promoting regional peace and security and the humanitarian gesture extended to Palestine, Cuba, Jamaica and Sudan. Ambassador Quaadil assured of the continued support of the Diplomatic Corps in advancing the development priorities of Ghana and deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Present at the ceremony were the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Members of the Council of State, Honourable Ministers of State, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Khadija Iddrisu, Traditional and Religious Leaders, among others.
