Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, has denounced the recent violent confrontations in Bawku that have led to loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property, including an attack on his own residence.
In a statement issued during his absence on official duties, Ayariga extended his condolences to families affected by the unrest and appealed to the youth to exercise restraint.
“I have received reports of the violent clashes involving security personnel and local youth in Bawku. It is deeply disturbing to learn that my private residence was also targeted,” he said.
He acknowledged the growing frustration among young people over the protracted Bawku conflict and concerns about the conduct of certain police officers. However, he reassured constituents that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) remains steadfast in its pursuit of peace and justice in the region.
Ayariga expressed strong backing for the mediation process being spearheaded by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, while also commending the involvement of other traditional authorities, such as the Overlords of Kusaug and Mamprugu.
“I urge all parties to fully support the peace initiatives led by Otumfuo. Upholding the rule of law and court rulings is vital as we seek lasting peace,” he emphasized.
He also addressed circulating falsehoods on social media, describing them as politically motivated attacks meant to discredit him. He urged the public to disregard such misinformation and instead remain focused on supporting efforts toward unity and peace.
Reiterating his stance on chieftaincy matters in Bawku, Ayariga maintained that no one else should assume the role of chief in the town, but affirmed his respect for the Asantehene’s leadership in managing the delicate issue.
He concluded by advising security forces operating in the area to exercise restraint, given the volatility of the situation.
