In a significant diplomatic move to enhance bilateral cooperation, the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Angel Lossada visited the Ministry for Sports and Recreation on Thursday 27th March 2025.

The purpose of the visit was to pay a courtesy call on the Minister, congratulate him on his new appointment as Minister for the Sports and Recreation sector, and introduce himself to the Minister.

During the meeting, their discussion focused on fostering collaboration between Spain and Ghana as far as sports was concerned with both parties expressing a shared commitment to advancing sports development and cultural exchange.

The Ambassador met with the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams (Hon), and other senior officials of the Ministry to explore potential areas of partnership.

The Ambassador noted that both parties had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for collaboration in sports development which would inure to the benefit of their respective countries and was ready to see to the implementation of the MOU by constituting a committee to begin the implementation of the MOU.

He emphasized Spain’s long-standing tradition of excellence in various sports including football and tennis and highlighted the potential for cooperation that could benefit both countries. “Spain has a wealth of experience in sports development and international competitions,” the Ambassador said. “My biggest interest is to collaborate with you to help elevate the sports sector.”

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams (Hon) expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and welcomed Spain’s willingness to share expertise. “This collaboration is a fantastic opportunity for us to learn from Spain’s best practices and further develop our own sports sector,” the Minister stated. “We are particularly excited about the prospect of working together on sports programs and building stronger ties between our two countries in the world of sports.”

He noted that, sports are no longer a mere competition but a tool that is being used to unite countries stating the contribution of sports to the economic transformation of various countries.

Hon, Adams mentioned the importance of creating sustainable programs that not only focus on high-performance sports but also encourage grassroots participation, particularly among young people.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both parties agreeing to continue discussions and work towards formalizing their collaboration in the coming weeks expressing their optimism that this partnership will lead to lasting benefits for the sports communities in both Spain and Ghana.

This visit underscores the growing importance of sports as a tool for diplomacy, cultural exchange, and international cooperation. As Ghana continues to develop its sports infrastructure, collaboration with Spain is expected to play a key role in achieving this goal.

Present at the meeting was the economic and commercial counselor at the Spanish Embassy in Ghana, Mr. Yann Emonet, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Mr. William Kartey and other senior officials of the Ministry.
