Committee on Petitions seeks wise counsel from Speaker

The Committee on Petitions, led by its leadership, has met with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to seek guidance and clarification regarding its mandates.

The Rt. Hon. Speaker took the opportunity to enlighten members on the committee’s mandate established by Order 223 of the Standing Orders.

He noted that one of Parliament’s key and evolving functions is to address grievances. To this end, the framers of the new Standing Orders considered it necessary to create a dedicated committee for petitions within the Standing Orders.

In his remarks, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Kwame Appiah Kodua, thanked the Speaker for his sound counsel and for providing the committee with a clear understanding of its responsibilities in handling petitions effectively.

The Committee is one of 44 Parliament committees chaired by a member not part of the government.

The Committee on Petitions has the following Members: Hon. Kofi Obiri Yeboah (Vice Chairman), Hon. Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Hon. Matthew Nyindam, Hon. Seidu Haruna (Ranking Member), Hon. Armah Blay Nyameke (Deputy Ranking Member), Hon. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Hon. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, Hon. Charles Agbeve, Hon. Joycelyn Quashie, Hon. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Hon. Ebenezer Addo, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and Hon. Emmanuel K. Ntekuni.
