The Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Anim, has urged the public to eschew all forms of electoral violence and election-related malfeasance to guarantee Ghana’s democracy, human rights and achieve sustainable development.

The Kumawu MP, who doubles as Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of Parliament, made these remarks in the aftermath of the violence witnessed during the Ablekuma North elections held in 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Hon. Anim believes such acts undermine the essence of our democracy and violate both local and international law and treaties such as Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and as our 1992 Republican Constitution guarantees fundamental human rights, including the right to life, liberty, and security of person, which are undermined by electoral violence.

Hon. Anim also admonished Government, Political Parties, Security Agencies, the National Peace Council (NPC), and the Electoral Commission, to develop as key Stakeholders, an electoral management architecture that prevents such violent conducts.

He has also applauded steps by the Ghana Police Service to interrogate the police commander who assaulted a journalist, condemning the action, and pledged that the Human Rights Committee shall continuously voice out acts which violate the rights, freedoms, and dignity of Ghanaians.
