The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has reported a major improvement in its financial performance, with internally generated revenue exceeding its target by more than 125 per cent during the first year of the administration of its Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse.

Prof. Browne Klutse made the disclosure on Monday, August 31, 2026, as she marked her first year as CEO of the environmental regulatory agency.

According to her, the improved revenue performance has enabled the EPA to remit GH¢20 million to the Consolidated Fund, describing the payment as a significant milestone in the authority’s history.

She attributed the turnaround to reforms aimed at strengthening the authority’s operations and improving revenue mobilisation. The reforms include the digitisation of EPA services and the introduction of more efficient systems for processing permits and other regulatory services.

Prof. Browne Klutse said the stronger financial position has also created room for the authority to expand its operations across the country.

The EPA has subsequently expanded its presence through the establishment of new district offices and increased its operational capacity with additional staff and vehicles.

The development is expected to strengthen the authority’s ability to monitor environmental activities, enforce regulations and respond to pollution-related challenges, including illegal mining and its impact on the environment.

The figures also present a strong case for Prof. Browne Klutse’s results-driven leadership at the EPA. Within her first year, the authority has moved beyond revenue mobilisation to building the financial and operational capacity required to deliver on its core mandate. The GH¢20 million remittance to the Consolidated Fund further positions the EPA as an institution capable of generating resources for the state while strengthening its own operations.

For President Mahama’s administration, the development offers a significant boost to the government’s environmental agenda. A better-resourced EPA gives the President a stronger institutional platform to pursue policies on galamsey, pollution control, climate action and sustainable development. It also demonstrates how effective leadership in the environmental sector can produce measurable results for both the institution and the wider economy. Prof. Browne Klutse’s first-year performance therefore marks a notable step towards making environmental protection a stronger and more accountable part of Ghana’s development drive.
