The Teachers’ Forum has taken another bold step in promoting environmental protection by planting 117 tree seedlings along the road median from Galilea towards Chinese in the Ga South Municipality.

The exercise, held on Friday, 31 July 2026, marks the beginning of a large-scale forestation project expected to cover the entire road median from the Kasoa Overhead to the Weija Barrier. The project will be carried out in phases until the stretch is fully covered with trees.

The initiative forms part of the Teachers’ Forum Forestation Project (TFFP), a programme aimed at encouraging teachers to support environmental protection and climate change education. Beyond the classroom, the forum is promoting tree planting along roads, in schools, public institutions, private establishments and other designated areas.

The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with support from local assemblies and other stakeholders.

Members of the forum who participated in the exercise included Mr. Abu Safian, President of the Teachers’ Forum; Mr. Julius Blay, Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of the Teachers’ Forum Forestation Project; New Love Mensah-Codjoe, Evans Martey Narh, Adams Ishmael, Wisdom Amesimeku, Bismarck Owusu, Kwesi Gyan and Hans Nyansah.

The Ga South Municipal Assembly supported the exercise by providing the tools and equipment needed for the planting through its collaboration with the Teachers’ Forum.

Addressing members after the planting exercise, Mr. Abu Safian said teachers have a responsibility to contribute to national development beyond their classroom duties. He noted that environmental protection and climate change have become important national issues and stressed the need for teachers to lead by example.

He said the Teachers’ Forum has made climate change education and forestation key programmes of the organisation. According to him, the growing interest shown by teachers in the initiative shows that the project will continue to expand across the Greater Accra Region.

Mr. Abu Safian also called on teachers, schools, corporate organisations and public institutions to support the campaign by taking part in tree planting and helping to care for the seedlings.

Residents and shop owners along the planting route welcomed the initiative and pledged to protect the seedlings. Some vulcanising shops also donated used vehicle tyres to fence the young trees and protect them from damage.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of the Teachers’ Forum Forestation Project, Mr. Julius Blay, said the team is ready to continue the exercise until the entire road median from the Kasoa Overhead to the Weija Barrier is covered with trees.

He appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives across the Greater Accra Region to partner with the Teachers’ Forum by providing suitable locations and the necessary support to extend the programme to other districts.

Mr. Blay expressed confidence that the project would help improve the environment while increasing public awareness of climate change and the importance of tree planting across the region.
