Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has urged Ghanaian corporate entities to view cycling as a strategic long-term investment, highlighting its vital role in promoting health, youth development, sustainability, and tourism. Speaking at the official launch of the 6th edition of the 3FM Tour du Ghana today, he emphasized the importance of early engagement to build and expand the sport’s audience and impact.
The event was attended by prominent stakeholders from Ghana’s sports sector, the corporate community, media representatives, and members of the cycling fraternity. All parties shared a common goal: to elevate cycling in Ghana and leverage its potential for broader national development.
In his address, Hon. Adams laid out an inspiring vision of transforming the Tour du Ghana into a globally recognized sporting event. Drawing inspiration from international races like the Tour de France, he envisioned Ghana becoming a destination for international cyclists and tourists who come not only to compete but to experience the country’s diverse landscapes, historic towns, and vibrant cultural sites.
“The mountains, coastlines, valleys, and lively communities across Ghana provide a stunning backdrop for a world-class cycling tour,” he said. “Imagine visitors riding through our scenic routes, immersing themselves in our rich culture, and supporting local businesses along the way.”
He further highlighted the economic opportunities that sports tourism can bring, noting that such events could stimulate growth in sectors like hospitality, transportation, food, and retail. “The true value of the Tour will be reflected in the positive impact on our local economies and communities,” he added.
Looking to the future, Hon. Adams reiterated his commitment to transforming the Tour du Ghana into an event with international appeal. He underscored that with strategic investments and partnerships, Ghana could position itself as a premier cycling destination, attracting global participants and tourists eager to explore the country’s scenic and cultural attractions.
He praised the partnership between Media General and the Ghana Cycling Federation, emphasizing that sustainable sports development depends on collaboration among government, federations, the private sector, and the media. “Media General’s dedication of platforms, resources, and expertise, combined with the federation’s technical skills, is crucial in building a resilient and thriving sport ecosystem,” he stated.
