The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Queen Mothers to play a more active and meaningful role in the development of their communities.
The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah in her keynote address at the Ministry’s maiden engagement with Queen Mothers within the Greater Accra Region, on Wednesday , 9th September,2026 at the the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs at Dodowa indicated that women remained a valuable resource to community development when given the opportunity, support and recognition to contribute effectively.
She noted that Queen Mothers, by virtue of their influence and close connection with families and communities, could play a critical role in promoting peace, advising traditional authorities and mobilising communities towards development.
The engagement, organised specifically for Queen Mothers, focused on key areas including economic empowerment, access to MASLOC support for businesses, health and wellbeing, skills development and knowledge of laws governing chieftaincy.
Hon. Sowah called on the Paramount Chiefs to create greater opportunities for Queen Mothers to participate actively in decision-making and community development, stressing that their perspectives and contributions could significantly complement the work of traditional authorities.
She also encouraged the Queen Mothers to strengthen their engagement with young people within their communities to better understand their concerns, secure their buy-in for community initiatives and help bridge the generational gap.
According to her, Queen Mothers must remain accessible to their people and provide a listening ear to community members, while also working closely with traditional leaders to offer sound advice on issues affecting families and communities.
She further stressed the importance of regular women’s meetings as platforms for discussing challenges, sharing knowledge and identifying opportunities for empowerment.
