Family workshop for hearing training completed in Accra

A non governmental organization known as Med El Academy, the Speech, Hearing and Therapy Centre, Haatso, on 6th to 7th march held a family Curriculum training workshop at the talkative mom studios mainly for parents of children who have been fitted with the Med El cochlear implant (CI).

The workshop was held for Local Speech and Language Therapists who have received significant training over the last few years who teamed together to educate parents of children already implanted and those waiting to be implanted.
Participants received information on how hearing works and were coached in how to practically support their children with the CI to ensure they gained maximum benefit from its use.

It was addressed by Nana Akua Victoria owusu who is a specialist in speech and language therapist rehabilitation at Med El Academy reiterated the importance of the 2 day training workshop initiative and pointed out that it was the application of modern technology to ensure that children were not left behind in the area of medical screening.

Nana Akua therefore urged the participants to “make sure that they spread the knowledge, the resources and collaborate, because at the end of the day our goal is to make sure that the patients are supported and people get the kind of help they need.”
She Emphasized the importance of this initiative and pointed out that it was the application of modern technology to ensure that children were not left behind in the area of medical screening.

She further added that “when we work together, we can advocate to make sure that resources are not spent in the wrong areas but on the right things which would make an impact on people’s lives.

Med El Academy, is a renowned company in Austria, manufactures and manages cochlear implants. Together with ENT Surgeons at KTBH and rehabilitation therapists at Korle Bu, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the Speech, Hearing and Therapy Centre they provide appropriate CI care for children and adults fitted with cochlear implants.
