The Women’s Sports Association in Ghana has officially called on Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, to strengthen collaboration and support for women’s sports across the country. Led by President Joyce Mahama, the delegation visited the Minister’s office to introduce the association and share its activities aimed at empowering women in sports and addressing gender-related issues.
The association, which has regional representation within Ghana and across Africa, highlights its role in ensuring the well-being of women athletes, focusing on discipline, psychological support, and gender equality. Notably, Ghana currently holds the position of African President within the African Women’s Sports Association, a testament to the country’s leadership in women’s sports on the continent.
During the meeting, Hon. Adams congratulated the leadership of the association, particularly President Joyce Mahama and the Secretary, on their influential roles. He expressed a strong commitment to supporting women’s participation in sports, emphasizing the need to mobilize more women to take up leadership roles at national, continental, and global levels. “This not only enhances recognition but also demonstrates what Ghana can offer to the world,” he said.
The Minister assured the association of his support and collaboration in safeguarding the integrity of women in sports, especially concerning issues of sexual exploitation and abuse. “I am interested in working with people who understand the sector and are dedicated to its development,” he added.
He further urged women to contest for leadership positions within various sports federations at the African and International levels, viewing such participation as a vital step toward greater recognition and influence for Ghanaian women athletes and administrators.
In a gesture of encouragement, Hon. Adams extended an invitation to the association to attend the upcoming President’s Cup scheduled for July 6th, 2025, viewing it as an excellent platform to showcase Ghana’s talents and promote women’s participation in high-profile sporting events.
The visit underscores the government’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in sports, with the Women’s Sports Association calling for increased support and opportunities to foster leadership, development, and protection for women athletes in Ghana and beyond.
