In the wake of recent violence in Ablekuma North during the re-run of elections at 19 polling stations, the Minority Caucus in parliament has issued a stern call for immediate accountability and action to safeguard Ghana’s democratic integrity.

The caucus demands that within the next 72 hours, key officials implicated in endorsing and justifying violence be swiftly dismissed and that all perpetrators face full legal consequences.

The Minority led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, in a statement, insisted that President John Mahama must act within 48 hours to dismiss Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw, CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, and Malik Basintale, Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency. Both officials have publicly celebrated and justified violence against opposition figures, an act the caucus deems unacceptable and disqualifying for holding public office. He said their removal is seen as essential to demonstrate that the government condemns political violence and upholds the rule of law.

He also called on all individuals involved in the violence be arrested and prosecuted without delay, “the police are urged to provide daily updates on their investigations and arrests to ensure transparency. Additionally, the Ghana Police Service is called upon to conduct a comprehensive investigation into security failures, including examining the alleged role of Chief Superintendent Lumor Frederick Senanu. Any officers found to be complicit must face immediate dismissal and criminal charges”.

The caucus demands again that President Mahama publicly condemn today’s violence within 24 hours. He is also called upon to personally apologize to victims, including Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and Nana Akua Afriyie, reaffirming his commitment to peace and condemning violence unequivocally, without justification.

The Minority Caucus urged the people of Ablekuma North not to allow intimidation and violence to silence their voices. Ghana’s democracy depends on active and fearless participation. Civil society organizations, journalists, and all defenders of democracy are called upon to join in demanding accountability and protecting the nation’s constitutional rights.

“The caucus emphasizes that it will not tolerate this descent into political barbarism. It vows to utilize every constitutional means to hold the government accountable and ensure justice is served, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic future”, he submitted.
