Concerned Customers of ECG in Ketu South to protest over mass disconnections and Meter removals

Members of the Concerned Customers of ECG in the Ketu South Municipality have announced a peaceful demonstration to protest the company’s recent mass disconnections and meter removals in Yame, Ketu South.

The protest follows ECG’s actions on January 8 and February 15, 2025, which contravene a December 2024 government directive mandating the regularization of all ECG-installed meters and prohibiting arbitrary removals.

The demonstrators demand immediate government intervention to enforce compliance, restore unlawfully removed meters, and prevent further harassment of customers.

The statement signed and issued for the group by Napoleon Gbeti, Kunu Etsey and Ekue Kouevi assured the police of a peaceful demo in line with the Law.

Below if the full statement:

Concerned Customers of Electricity Company of Ghana

  1. O. Box 279 Aflao, Volta Region

31st August, 2025

The Divisional Commander

Ghana Police Service Aflao Division Aflao,

Volta Region

Dear Sir/Madam,

NOTICE OF PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION (CHANGE OF DATE)

We, the undersigned members of the Concerned Customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana, respectfully submit this official notice of a peaceful public demonstration in accordance with Section 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

The demonstration, which was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, 4th September, 2025, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 30th September, 2025, commencing at exactly 9:00 AM.

The route of the procession remains unchanged: it will begin at Victoria Park, Aflao, proceed through the Aflao–Denu–Accra Road, and end at the Ketu South Municipal Assembly premises.

Reason for Change of Date: The change has become necessary due to two main factors:

  1. The recent tragic helicopter crash, which led to a period of national mourning, during which it would not have been appropriate to stage a public demonstration.
  2. The need to allow more time to adequately sensitize and mobilize a greater number of affected customers and concerned citizens to join the exercise. Purpose of Demonstration:

This demonstration arises from the disturbing conduct of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Denu District, which on 8th January 2025 and 15th February 2025, carried out mass disconnections and removed electricity meters from lawful customers at Yame, a community within the Ketu South Constituency, under the pretext that the meters were not officially recognized.

This action directly contravenes a clear directive issued by the Government of Ghana, which stated:

“All ECG-installed meters, including those installed under previous programs, are to be regularized and captured into the ECG’s system. No such meter shall be removed arbitrarily.

Any issues with such meters must be resolved through lawful administrative procedures and not through forced disconnections or removals.”

(Ministry of Energy Directive, Ref No. MOE/ECG/001/2024, dated 20th December 2024) Despite this directive, ECG has failed to restore the meters already removed and continues to act contrary to the public interest, causing undue hardship, darkness, and anxiety to innocent customers—many of whom are vulnerable.

We therefore demand immediate government intervention to:

  1. Enforce compliance with the Ministry of Energy directive.
  2. Compel ECG to return all unlawfully removed meters.
  3. Cease any further illegal removals or harassment of customers.

We assure the Ghana Police Service that the demonstration will be peaceful and orderly, with designated marshals to control the crowd and direct movement. We request the necessary police presence and protection to ensure public order and safety during the exercise.

Please find below the names and signature lines of the petitioners organizing this lawful protest: We count on your cooperation and professional support to safeguard this democratic exercise.

Thank you. Yours faithfully, ………………… ………………… ………………… Napoleon Gbeti Kunu Etsey Ekue Kouevi 0246128595 0206963681 0546448612 [List of signatories continues as in the original document]
