The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority earlier hosted the Deputy Minister for Transport and Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, at the Authority’s Headquarters in Tema.
The visit marked her first official engagement with GPHA since her appointment by the President a month ago.
Director General of GPHA, Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, together with his management team, received the Deputy Minister and congratulated her warmly on her new role at the Ministry of Transport. He expressed the Authority’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry to advance the development of Ghana’s ports and maritime sector.
Madam Affo-Toffey explained that her visit formed part of her efforts to familiarize herself with GPHA’s operations and to better understand the challenges confronting the Authority. She acknowledged the critical role of the maritime sector in boosting Ghana’s economy but noted that issues such as the high cost of doing business at the ports affect competitiveness.
She assured management that the Ministry, under the President’s directive, is committed to collaborating with GPHA and other sector agencies to address these concerns and improve the business climate.
The Deputy Minister further commended GPHA for its successful implementation of 24-hour port operations, which she said was a major step in making Ghana’s ports more efficient and responsive to stakeholder needs.
As part of her engagement, Hon. Affo-Toffey toured Terminals 2 and 3 of the Port of Tema. She also indicated her intention to extend her familiarization tour to the Port of Takoradi in the coming weeks to gain a broader understanding of the Authority’s operations.
