The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has intensified its efforts to enhance safety on Lake Volta, as for the first time deployed staff and pledged to provide affordable life jackets for boat operators and community members at Kpando Torkor in the Volta Region.
This commitment was highlighted during a working visit by the GMA’s Board of Directors led by Madam Jemilat Jawula Mahamah together with the National executive management to inspect work on the satellite office and accommodation under construction at Torkor crossing point.
The office, which will serve as a coordination office, is expected to aid officials in the effective enforcement of load limits and compliance on passenger boats.
The Director General of GMA, Dr Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt Rtd) underscored that this initiative marks a significant step toward making the Volta Lake a safer route.
He also stressed the importance of community collaboration, noting that residents are critical partners in ensuring safety.
The MP for the area, Sebastian Deh, expressed gratitude to the board for the initiation. He also pledged his support and assured that the initiative will go a long way to protect life and property
