On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, a tragic stampede occurred at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the commencement of the 2025/2026 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise. The incident resulted in the death of six individuals and left several others injured.
According to sources from newsalertgh.com, thousands of young Ghanaians had gathered at the stadium in a desperate attempt to secure enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). The overwhelming turnout, coupled with poor crowd control, contributed significantly to the tragic event.
Preliminary investigations, as stated in a press release by the Ghana Armed Forces, indicate that the stampede was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates ahead of the scheduled screening at approximately 6:20 a.m.
The injured are currently receiving emergency medical attention at the 37 Military Hospital. The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize those affected and are making arrangements to notify the families of the deceased.
In a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations (Ghana Navy), the Ghana Armed Forces expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to those injured. They also assured that further updates will be provided.
