The Bank of Ghana has extended the deadline for existing International Money Transfer Operators to register under its new guidelines to 31st July 2026, warning that non-compliant operators will be shut out of the market.

In Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2026/13 dated 12th June 2026, signed by Secretary of the Bank Aimee Vyda Quashie, the central bank said the extension follows its earlier Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2026/02 issued on 20th January 2026 on the registration and operations of IMTOs.

Key directives from BoG: All existing IMTOs must submit required documentation to regularize operations on or before 31st July 2026.

IMTOs that fail to comply will not be permitted to operate in Ghana.

Any existing arrangements or partnerships with Banks, Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions, and Payment Service Providers will be “rendered null and void” for non-compliant IMTOs.

Such entities may face further regulatory and enforcement actions under applicable laws.

The notice was addressed to IMTOs, Banks, SDIs, and PSPs, with the Bank directing all regulated institutions to ensure “strict adherence to this Directive”.

For enquiries or technical assistance, BoG asked stakeholders to contact the Head, Payment Systems Department via Info.paymentsystems@bog.gov.gh.

The move is expected to tighten oversight of remittance flows and improve consumer protection in Ghana’s money transfer sector.

BoG issued the Guidelines for the Registration and Operations of IMTOs in January 2026 to formalize the sector. The July 31 extension gives operators more time to meet compliance requirements.
