In this stultifying atmosphere, the ultimate currency of valour, recognition, was too often traded for proximity to power rather than proximity to peril.
Today, under the resolute stewardship of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, a seismic shift is quietly redrawing the moral architecture of the Ghana Police Service.
When the IGP elevated four intrepid officers, General Corporal Mortsi Kwashie Divine, Detective Corporal Salifu Ishmael Aketisiwin, General Lance Corporal Ernest Ameyaw Akumfi, and General Lance Corporal John Bekaar Vitus, to their next ranks, he did far more than execute a routine administrative promotion. There, an audacious armed robbery syndicate had woven a web of terror across the Wa West District and the Wa Municipality, threatening the fragile peace of hardworking citizens and challenging the sovereign writ of the state.
In such moments of crisis, institutions are forced to strip away the varnish of theory and confront the naked reality of their operational readiness. Many lesser leaders would have resorted to hollow platitudes, issuing tired press statements from the insulated comfort of headquarters while the foot soldiers bore the brunt of the violence alone.
But Christian Tetteh Yohuno is cut from a different, sterner cloth. Understanding that modern policing is won or lost in the realm of tactical intelligence and unwavering resolve, he backed an intelligence-led operation that dismantled the syndicate root and branch, netting six dangerous suspects and restoring safety to traumatised communities.
More importantly, he recognised that operational triumph without immediate, tangible institutional gratitude is a recipe for silent demoralisation. By reaching down into the ranks and instantly elevating the men who hunted the shadows, the IGP executed a masterclass in transformational leadership. He ensured that the young constable on the frontline knows that his sweat, his sacrifice, and his courage are seen, valued, and rewarded by the highest office in the land.
This is the essence of constitutional clarity and moral fortification. A service cannot demand extraordinary sacrifice while offering ordinary appreciation. When bravery yields advancement, courage becomes contagious.
When meritocracy replaces seniority-by-stagnation as the primary engine of career progression, the entire psychological posture of an institution pivots from compliance to initiative, from hesitation to decisive action. Yohuno’s leadership is systematically dismantling the toxic notion that public service is a thankless burden.
Instead, he is forging a noble covenant between the state and its protectors: you guard the republic with your lives, and the republic will honour your name with dignity and distinction.
In the grand ledger of national development, security is the oxygen upon which all economic and social freedoms breathe. If the citizen cannot sleep with eyes closed, the state has failed its primary existential mandate.
