The Government of Ghana has launched the National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2026–2035) as part of efforts to build more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities and communities.
The two strategic frameworks were launched during the opening of the Ninth Session of the Ghana Urban Forum, held under the theme:
“Resetting Ghana’s Urban Future: Thinking Nationally and Taking Local Actions for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Cities.”
The policies seek to address critical urban development challenges, including unplanned settlements, inadequate housing, flooding, congestion and gaps in infrastructure and essential services.
The launch marks an important step towards strengthening urban planning, improving living conditions in informal settlements and ensuring that Ghana’s rapid urbanisation becomes a driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
The Government is committed to working with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, development partners, traditional authorities, the private sector, civil society and communities to translate these frameworks into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
Together, we can reset Ghana’s urban future and build cities that are inclusive, resilient and sustainable for generations to come.
