The political landscape of Ghana is once again abuzz with discussions surrounding the return of Baba Jamal to Parliament. Baba Jamal, a seasoned politician and a prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has garnered widespread attention as he prepares to be sworn in, as a Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, joining the majority side of the House.

This follows his landslide victory over his counterpart in the bye election conducted on Tuesday, March, 2026.

Whereas Baba Jamal scored about 63% of the total valid vote cast, his closest competitor Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,000 votes, accounting for 23.45%. The three other candidates in the race collectively secured 2,254 votes (13.26%), while 122 ballots were rejected.

The bye election came about as a result of demise of the MP Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026.

Until his election as MP, Baba Jamal was Ghana’s Hogh Commissioner to Nigeria.

Political pundits that fmnewsonline.com talked to were with the views that his return signals a resurgence of experience and resilience in Ghanaian politics.

The newly elected Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, who has previously served as the MP for Akotia, expressed optimism about Baba Jamal’s comeback. In an interview, the MP highlighted Baba Jamal’s extensive experience in legislative matters and his deep understanding of national issues. “Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament is a boost for our democracy. His dedication and commitment to public service have always been evident, and his presence will undoubtedly enrich parliamentary debates,” he stated.

Adding to the significance of Baba Jamal’s return is his diplomatic role as Ghana’s ambassador to Nigeria. His diplomatic experience has broadened his perspective on regional cooperation and international relations, skills that will serve him well in Parliament. “His diplomatic background enhances his capacity to represent Ghana’s interests effectively,” remarked a legal expert and political analyst.

As a lawyer, Baba Jamal’s legal acumen has been instrumental in shaping his approach to governance and policy-making. His legal expertise, combined with his political experience, positions him as a formidable figure capable of navigating complex legislative processes.

Commenting on his return, Baba Jamal himself emphasized his commitment to national development and the importance of unity within the NDC. “My focus remains on serving the people, advocating for their needs, and contributing to Ghana’s progress,” he remarked.

The return of Baba Jamal to Parliament is seen by many as a testament to his resilience and enduring influence within Ghanaian politics. It also underscores the dynamic nature of Ghana’s democracy, where seasoned politicians continue to play pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s future.
