Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that teachers across the country strictly adopt mother tongue instruction in all schools, effective immediately.
According to the Minister, the directive aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed focus on transforming foundational learning in Ghana.
“Mr President, you have emphasized that we should shift focus to basic education and to improve learning outcomes at the basic levels,” he said.
“In line with that and with the authority, I am directing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service that from today, teachers’ use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all schools.
“The GES is to ensure strict enforcement of this. This is part of President Mahama’s reset agenda.”
Mr. Iddrisu explained that the policy forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the education sector and ensuring that pupils understand concepts better from the start of their academic journey.
He stressed that promoting the use of local languages in teaching and learning would significantly enhance comprehension, boost literacy levels, and preserve Ghana’s rich cultural identity.
The Education Minister made these remarks during the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons with Disabilities, held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
