The Energy Commission has held stakeholder consultations in Cape Coast, Koforidua and Sunyani as part of efforts to promote energy efficiency and sustainability in Ghana’s building sector.
The engagements brought together representatives from government institutions, local authorities, financial institutions, property owners, professional bodies, academia and civil society to review the proposed Energy Performance Certification (EPC) Regulations for public and commercial buildings.
Under the proposed regulations, qualifying buildings will be required to obtain and display Energy Performance Certificates, with their energy efficiency assessed using a seven-star rating system. The certificates will be valid for five years.
The consultations provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share their perspectives on the proposed requirements, enforcement mechanisms and practical considerations for implementation.
Feedback gathered will inform the finalisation of the regulations, as well as public education, capacity building and pilot implementation.
Through this initiative, the Energy Commission is taking another important step towards improving energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting a more sustainable built environment in Ghana.
