The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment on 14th January, 2026 had the distinct honour of hosting Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on a historic working visit. The engagement underscored government’s unwavering commitment to advancing youth-centered policies and programmes that foster empowerment, innovation, and national development.
During the visit, the Vice President held strategic discussions with the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon George Opare Addo, Directors of the Ministry and Chief Executive Officers of the Agencies under the Ministry on strengthening institutional frameworks that support skills development, entrepreneurship, and leadership opportunities for Ghana’s young population. She emphasized the critical role of youth in shaping the nation’s future and reaffirmed government’s dedication to creating inclusive platforms that harness their potential.
The working visit also provided her with the opportunity to acquaint herself with current developments of the Ministry and to explore new partnerships aimed at accelerating youth empowerment. The Vice President commended the Ministry for its efforts in driving impactful programmes and assured of her continued support.
During the visit, the Hon. Minister delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting both achievements and pressing challenges in youth the youth sector. A key revelation was the concerning data that 41% of students in tertiary institutions and 37% of students in secondary schools are engaged in drugs and substance abuse. This finding underscored the urgent need for coordinated interventions to safeguard the health, well-being and future of Ghana’s youth.
This milestone visit marks a renewed chapter in Ghana’s pursuit of sustainable development through youth empowerment, reflecting the administration’s vision of building a resilient, innovative and prosperous nation led by its vibrant young citizens.
