The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre to strengthen access to specialised healthcare, particularly cancer diagnosis and treatment, for eligible Ghanaians living with chronic non-communicable diseases.

The partnership marks a significant step in the Trust Fund’s efforts to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent patients from accessing critical medical services.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Administrator of GMTF, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku said the agreement moves the two institutions from discussions to a formal commitment to work together in improving access to quality healthcare.

According to her, the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre was selected as a key partner because of its specialised services, particularly in cancer care, including radiotherapy and PET Scan services, which are critical for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of cancer patients.

Ms. Darko-Opoku explained that while the mandate of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund includes providing financial support to eligible Ghanaians living with chronic non-communicable diseases, the ultimate objective is to ensure that beneficiaries can actually access the specialised care they need.

“For me, this MOU is more than just a document that we are signing today. It represents our shared commitment to working together to improve access to quality cancer care”, she noted.

The Adminsitrator stressed that the patient remains at the centre of the partnership, noting that patients requiring specialised cancer treatment should not be denied care simply because they cannot afford the cost.

The CEO of Sweden Ghana Medical Centre, Dr. Clement Egyin Edusa, welcomed the partnership and expressed confidence that it would have a direct and positive impact on patients, particularly those who struggle to afford cancer treatment.

Dr. Edusa said the Centre was happy to partner with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, adding that the collaboration would provide patients with greater access to advanced medical technology and specialised services.

He noted that Sweden Ghana Medical Centre has highly advanced technology that can support the diagnosis and treatment of patients, and expressed optimism that the partnership would enable more beneficiaries to benefit from these technologies and improve their health outcomes.

The CEO emphasised that the collaboration would be particularly important for cancer patients, for whom access to timely and quality treatment can make a significant difference.

He further added that the partnership represents a shared commitment to reducing barriers to specialised healthcare and ensuring that more Ghanaians can access the treatment and technology they need to live healthier lives.

The MOU provides a framework for the two institutions to work together effectively and sustainably, with both sides expected to strengthen the relationship and explore additional areas of collaboration in the future.
