The Minister of Local Government, Chaitain y and Religious Affairs Ahmed Ibrahim, reclaimed National Sanitation Day on September 6, 2025, calling on Ghanaians to participate actively in the monthly cleanup exercise. Here’s a summary of the

The initiative aims to restore discipline in public spaces, empower local government structures, and promote citizen participation in maintaining environmental hygiene.

According to the Minister, the exercise will be observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month, with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) responsible for enforcing sanitation bye-laws and providing necessary logistics.

At the launch the sector Minister, asked the MMDAs to submit monthly reports on sanitation activities, and performance will be tracked through a central dashboard and “a dedicated sanitation hotline will also be established for citizens to report nuisances”.

He said, Sanitation has been made a KPI for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and their performance will determine their continuation in office.

Mr. Almed also urged traditional authorities, faith-based organizations, youth groups, and the media to support the campaign and promote environmental sanitation.

The monthly exercise aims to reduce solid waste, flooding, and health risks associated with poor sanitation, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for all Ghanaians.
