The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) Operations, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, has revealed that following the government’s uncapping of NHIS funding, an additional 3.4 billion Ghana cedis has been injected into health funding in Ghana.

He submitted that, the Executive Management led by a transformational leader, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, CEO of the Authority, is focused on transforming the Scheme into “a modern, efficient, and people centred institution, one that continues to deliver on its promise of equitable access to quality health care for all Ghanaians”, through stakeholder engagements, listening to all partners and being responsive and creating systems that ensure the sustainability of the Scheme.

Speaking at a trainer of trainers’ staff sensitization workshop on the ongoing NHIA transformational reforms in Tamale on Friday, November 21, 2025, Dr. Djokoto stated that the uncapping of NHIS funding is the most significant investment in the Scheme since its establishment in 2003. Stating that, ‘in 2024, the Scheme spent 52% of its funds on claims payment, this year we are doing 65%’ with the expectation to increase by next year.

Dr. Senanu K. Djokoto explained in detail the rationale behind the Authority’s development and deployment of digital platforms, which aim to bring health care and systems closer to members and stakeholders, making the scheme more resilient and functional to the benefit of all.

These as part of the Telehealth strategy include the E-pharmacy, that will help in linking the patients to the nearest pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions, the Biometric Membership Authentication System (BMAS), is to help authenticate every member seeking healthcare at credentialed facilities and to ensure each claim being process for payment was real, and the cashless system, at the registrations centres no exchange of physical cash.

All these, he observed, are designed to ensure the accessibility of quality health care and the attainment of Universal Health Care by 2030.

In a welcoming address by the Northern Regional Operations Manageress, Madam Fauzia Shingu Alhassan, on behalf of the Regional Director, she noted that the training was crucial, as it is designed to equip staff as part of ongoing reforms aimed at redefining the NHIS in Ghana and making it sustainable.

She added that these are not just technological upgrades but critical shifts towards a more efficient, accessible, and confidence-boosting system for NHIS beneficiaries.

The workshop also included participants from the Director of Clinical Care of the Ghana Health Service, Northern Region, the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), and private health providers, as well as a representative of the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, in the person of Mr Gaeten Adangabey.

Mr. Oswald Essuah- Mensah, Ag. Director Corporate Affairs and Mr. Orison Aflu Ag. Deputy Director MIS took the participants through the design of digital platforms and how these will be implemented by next year.
