The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) on July 28, 2026, participated in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of Ghana’s (PMAG) 27th Day celebration.
The memorable event was held in Accra under the theme, “Advancing Ghana’s Pharmaceutical Sovereignty Through Innovation, Requisite Skills Mix and Quality Industrial Value Chain for Economic Transformation.”
The program brought together key stakeholders from the health and pharmaceutical sectors and was attended by several dignitaries.
Representing the Authority were the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Operations, Dr. Kwesi Senanu Djokoto; the Director of Quality Assurance, Madam Lydia Anaab-Bissi, the Director of Strategic Health Purchasing, Madam Ruby Aileen as well as staff from the Corporate Affairs Directorate and the Osu District Office. NHIA also mounted an exhibition stand and provided on-the-spot NHIS registration for participants.
Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing through the National Pharmaceutical Policy, strategic procurement, predictable NHIA reimbursements, workforce development, and investments in research, technology, and quality systems to improve access to quality medicines. He emphasized that collaboration among government, industry, academia, and development partners is essential to achieving pharmaceutical self-reliance.
The President of PMAG, Mr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, called for greater investment in innovation, skills development, quality assurance, and policy consistency to build a resilient pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and reduce Ghana’s dependence on imports. Dr. Kofi Nsiah-Poku, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration to boost local production, improve competitiveness, and position Ghana as a leading pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Africa.
The program concluded with a roundtable discussion where industry experts explored practical strategies for advancing Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector. NHIA’s active participation through its exhibition and on-the-spot NHIS registration reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to expanding healthcare access while supporting the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry.
