The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) has announced a major fault on the national power system this morning that caused power outages in some parts of the country.
In a statement issued today, Thursday, 20th August 2026, GRIDCo said the fault occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
According to GRIDCo, the fault triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal plants as part of the system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The company says its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected line and began systematic restoration.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily,” GRIDCo said.
The company apologised for the inconvenience and assured the public that all technical teams have been fully mobilised to achieve full restoration as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo says it will provide further updates as restoration progresses.
