Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, MP for Wa East and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, has commended the government’s efforts by improving local poultry production through the flagship Nkoko Nkitinkiti Household and Backyard Poultry Production Initiative. In an exclusive interview with fmnewsonline.com, Dr. Jasaw emphasized the positive impact of the free poultry distribution, which aims to reduce poultry imports and generate foreign exchange for Ghana.
His remarks followed a briefing from the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, and officials from the Ministry on the ongoing implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme and preparations for the current farming season. He urged continued commitment to these initiatives to further boost agriculture and create employment opportunities for the youth.
To date, the government is distributing 3 million free poultry birds nationwide to enhance local production, cut down on imports, and increase household incomes. Each constituency will receive 10,000 birds, benefiting approximately 60,000 households. The program aims to raise Ghana’s poultry self-sufficiency from 12% to over 75%.
Additionally, officials discussed other key projects, including the establishment of Farmer Service Centres, irrigation expansion, and the promotion of backyard poultry and vegetable farming—measures designed to strengthen food security and stimulate job creation.
