The Executive Director of Jospong Group of Companies, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, has called on the government to take a more active role in managing the Achimota Waste Transfer Station, popularly known as Zoom Pak, in Accra. He emphasized the group’s readiness to operate fully and announced plans to expand waste management operations to Malam, Teshie, and other waste stations next week.
Agyepong also appealed for subsidies to facilitate the full operation of Zoom Pak, which was established through a 2015 partnership between Jospong, the Turkish Government, and local authorities, aimed at improving waste management in Ghana.
During an inspection of the station, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, pledged to support the station’s full rehabilitation. He expressed appreciation for the partnership that led to Zoom Pak’s creation and highlighted its crucial role in reducing flooding and improving sanitation in Greater Accra.
Currently, around 3,000 tricycles operate at the station for waste collection, significantly aiding sanitation efforts. However, waste processing has stalled due to a lack of financial commitment from previous administrations. The minister assured that government support is essential to restore the station’s full functionality and address sanitation challenges in the region.
