Nsawam, Wednesday, 15th October —Concerned residents and citizens of Nsawam and its adjoining communities have submitted a formal petition to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly, demanding an urgent investigation and action regarding the complete collapse of the local rail network.

Dated October 8, 2025, the petition highlights the removal and non-restoration of the Nsawam–Accra and Nsawam–Koforidua railway lines, which has left the Nsawam train system “non-operational for several years”.

*A Vital Link Lost*
The railway network, once a “vital means of transportation” for the area, is now defunct, leading to severe consequences for the local populatio. According to the petitioners, the lack of a functioning train system has caused serious transportation challenges, increased road congestion, and the loss of employment opportunities once provided by the rail system.

The citizens expressed deep concern that the railway lines were removed “without clear public communication or accountability” regarding the reasons or the timeline for restoration. The non-functioning system has deprived commuters of an affordable, safe, and efficient transport alternative, creating a significant negative economic and social impact on residents, particularly traders, students, and low-income workers who rely on public transportation.

*Call for Independent Investigation and Restoration Roadmap*
The residents, represented by Raphael Edem Agodzi, are not just complaining—they are demanding concrete action from the MCE’s office. Their key requests include:
*Independent Investigation:* Constituting or requesting an independent probe into how and why the railway lines were removed, why they have not been replaced or restored, and calling for the appropriate punishment for any individuals found complicit.

*Official Report:* Engaging the Ministry of Railways Development and the Ghana Railway Company Limited to provide a clear report on the current state and future plans for the Nsawam rail network.

*Stakeholder Meeting:* Facilitating a meeting with the Assembly, traditional leaders, transport unions, and residents to establish a roadmap for restoring the Nsawam train system.

*Immediate Funding and Advocacy:* Advocating for immediate action and funding to rehabilitate the railway infrastructure as part of a sustainable strategy for transportation and employment in the area.

The petitioners strongly believe that restoring the Nsawam rail system is crucial for the municipality, stating it will “reduce traffic congestion, lower transport costs, promote economic growth, and create jobs, particularly for the youth”.

The petition concludes with a plea for the MCE to treat the matter with the “urgency it deserves” and to take steps to restore this “critical infrastructure for the benefit of the people of Nsawam”.
