The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has joined the Chiefs and people of Prampram to celebrate this year’s Homowo Festival in grand style.
Hon. Ocloo was honoured to represent His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, at the colourful festival which was celebrated under the theme: “Commemorating 200 Years of the Katamanso War: Unity in Remembrance, Pride in Our Culture, Hope for Our Future.”
Addressing the gathering, the Regional Minister said the celebration offered a profound reflection on the historical significance of the Katamanso War of 1826, a defining chapter in the history of the Ga-Dangme people and an enduring testament to courage, unity and collective resistance.
She noted that two centuries after the historic war, its memory continues to remind Ghanaians that their strength lies in the ability to stand together, preserve their heritage and build a future worthy of those who came before.
Hon. Ocloo described Homowo as a cherished expression of Ghana’s cultural identity, adding that through the traditional rites, the sprinkling of kpokpei, drumming, dancing, ancestral remembrance and the gathering of chiefs, elders and the wider community, the people reconnect with their history and reaffirm the values that bind them together.
She extended warm greetings and best wishes from President John Dramani Mahama to the Chiefs, Queen Mothers, elders and the good people of Prampram, and commended the traditional authorities and the organising committee for preserving customs and creating a platform where history, culture and community converge.
“As we commemorate 200 years of the Katamanso War, may we draw strength from the sacrifices of our ancestors, take pride in our rich cultural heritage and remain united in our determination to secure a peaceful, prosperous and hopeful future for generations yet unborn,” she said.
The festival was marked with rich cultural displays, traditional drumming and dancing, and the observation of customary rites amidst great fanfare.
