Ghana is set to host the highly anticipated 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between key stakeholders.

The agreement was formalized during a recent ceremony attended by the President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Confederation, Mr. Lamine Fati, alongside Ghanaian officials.

The MoU was signed between the Confederation of African Athletics, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana, represented by Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation.

The agreement confirms that the championships will take place from May 12th to 17th, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.

This marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s preparations for the continental event, with stakeholders working collaboratively to ensure its success.

Kofi Adams expressed confidence in Ghana’s readiness, highlighting the support from President John Dramani Mahama.

He noted that President John Dramani Mahama has prioritized opportunities like this, with provisions made in the national budget to upgrade critical sports infrastructure.
Hon. Adams emphasized that hosting the championships presents an excellent opportunity for Ghana to focus on sports infrastructure development, which will have lasting benefits for the country’s athletic programs.

He assured that Ghana is committed to delivering a memorable event that will showcase its capabilities on the global stage, attracting global attention and reinforcing its position as a capable host of major sporting events.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum commended Ghana for positioning itself strongly among contenders like Botswana for the hosting rights.

He urged Ghana to demonstrate the spirit of Pan-Africanism through the successful organization and execution of the championships. Malboum also expressed gratitude to Ghana’s leadership, praising President John Dramani Mahama for his strong support and good governance over the past year.

The upcoming championships are expected to draw elite athletes from across Africa, further elevating Ghana’s status as a hub for international sports. The event aligns with Ghana’s broader sports development agenda, emphasizing the promotion of athletics excellence across the continent and fostering unity through sports.
As Ghana prepares to host this prestigious event, the nation looks forward to showcasing its infrastructural and organizational capabilities while celebrating the continent’s athletic talent on a grand stage.
