The successful implementation of Ghana’s National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2025–2034) requires strong partnerships, coordinated action, and sustainable financing.
At the 9th Ghana Urban Forum held at the Alisa Hotel, policymakers, urban development experts, development partners, academia, and local government practitioners explored practical solutions to addressing rapid urbanisation, flooding, land use management, housing, and environmental sustainability.
The Forum also underscored the importance of strengthening data-driven urban planning, improving municipal revenue mobilisation, and enhancing the capacity of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to effectively manage urban growth. Participants emphasised that reliable urban data systems are critical for informed decision-making and efficient service delivery.
In addition, stakeholders called for increased investment in climate resilient infrastructure, improved drainage systems, and affordable housing schemes to address the growing pressures of urbanisation. The role of innovation and technology in smart city development was also highlighted as a key driver for modern urban transformation.
The discussions further highlighted the need for stronger institutional collaboration, innovative financing, effective land use planning, climate resilience, and greater private sector participation to build inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities across Ghana.
