In a decisive move to revitalize Ghana’s once glorious boxing industry, Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, today inaugurated the Interim Ghana Boxing Management Committee (IMC) at a ceremony held in the Ministry Conference Room.

Delivering his speech, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, emphasized the critical need for reform amid recent setbacks that have tarnished the sport’s reputation. “Ghana Boxing has experienced a concerning decline, with performances waning and unprofessional conduct threatening the safety and dignity of our athletes,” he stated. The tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju during a bout at Bukom Boxing Arena earlier this year served as a stark reminder of the urgent need for intervention.

Acknowledging the sport’s storied history with legends like Professor Azuma Nelson, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, and Joseph Agbeko, among others, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring Ghana’s international standing in boxing. “This effort is about safeguarding the future of our sport and ensuring it remains a source of national pride,” he declared.

The IMC, tasked with overseeing all professional boxing activities, will spearhead critical reforms, including the implementation of comprehensive medical protocols, the establishment of a Medical Commission, and enhanced doping controls in partnership with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). These measures aim to prioritize athlete safety, uphold integrity, and restore public confidence.

Hon. Adams also called for transparency and democratic governance within the industry, emphasizing the importance of conducting fair elections for the new executive board of the Professional Boxing Association of Ghana. The committee will facilitate the transition from amateur to professional boxing, restructure the association, and attract investment to foster sports tourism and boost Ghana’s competitiveness.

“Your responsibilities are clear and vital,” the Minister told the assembled committee members, stakeholders, and the media. “I trust you to work efficiently, transparently, and impartially to stabilize and elevate Ghana Boxing.”

He concluded with a rallying call for collective effort: “The future of Ghana Boxing depends on us all. Let us work together to restore pride, safety, and excellence to our beloved sport.”

The inauguration marks a significant step toward transforming Ghana Boxing into a safer, more professional, and internationally respected sport. As the committee embarks on this crucial journey, the nation watches eagerly, hopeful for a new chapter of glory and integrity in Ghanaian boxing.
