Ghana’s political landscape has been rocked by former President John Kufuor’s candid admission of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failures and arrogance in governance. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has seized on Kufuor’s remarks, accusing the NPP of abandoning prudent governance and pursuing policies that have brought hardship to Ghanaians.
In a statement, the NDC Communication Bureau said Kufuor’s comments, which acknowledged the NPP’s missteps and failures, deserve the attention of all Ghanaians. The party noted that Kufuor’s admission that the NPP rode on his achievements to secure electoral victory in 2016, only to abandon prudent governance, is a clear indication of the party’s arrogance and disregard for collective wisdom.
The NDC also highlighted Kufuor’s revelation that he was not consulted on major national decisions, including the National Cathedral project, the Domestic Debt Exchange programme, and scandals such as PDS. The party believes this confirms their long-held position that the NPP is driven by arrogance and unilateralism.
However, the NDC also questioned Kufuor’s timing, noting that his comments come only after the NPP has suffered electoral defeat and internal disunity. The party asked why Kufuor chose not to speak when Ghanaians most needed his voice, suggesting that his long silence contributed to the suffering of ordinary citizens.
The NDC has called on Ghanaians to reflect on Kufuor’s revelations and recognize that the NPP has lost its way. The party has positioned itself as the alternative, offering leadership that is honest, accountable, and people-centered.
The NPP has yet to respond to Kufuor’s comments, but the NDC is likely to capitalize on the former President’s admission in the coming days. The development is expected to dominate Ghana’s political discourse, with many calling for accountability and transparency in governance.
