The Bank of Ghana will introduce an upgraded series of Ghana Cedi banknotes to be known as the Heritage Series, as the 132nd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting to decide on the Policy Rate continues.
In a statement delivered at Bank Square on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama said the Heritage Series is themed: “The Cedi, Our Future: Secure, Designed to Last.”
According to the Governor, the Cedi is more than a medium of exchange and a symbol of economic sovereignty. He said core banknote designs have been in circulation for more than two decades and require modernisation to remain secure, durable and responsive to changing economic needs.
“The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and aspirations. They are designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting,” Dr. Asiama said.
He said the new notes will honour national heroes and celebrate Ghana’s heritage, culture and identity, with each denomination inspired by Ghanaian iconographic elements.
The Governor emphasised that the introduction of the Heritage Series does NOT mean existing Cedi notes will cease to be legal tender. The two will co-circulate.
“There is no need for the public to rush to exchange or withdraw existing notes solely because of the introduction of the Heritage Series,” he stressed.
He appealed to Ghanaians, businesses and financial institutions to desist from currency abuse — including crumpling, writing on, stapling banknotes, or using them for money bouquets, showering and spraying.
The Heritage Series will be officially launched on 3rd November 2026 at Bank Square, Accra.
Meanwhile, the MPC meeting that reviewed economic developments by consensus has maintained the Policy Rate at 14.0%.
