The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga (MP), has paid a working visit to Agbogbloshie to assess progress on the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise, now in its fifth day.
The exercise, which covers Agbogbloshie, Old Fadama, Abbosey Okai and Jamestown, brings together the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Zoomlion, DRIP teams and the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces.
During the visit, the Minister engaged the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Zoomlion officials, DRIP coordinators and machine operators, as well as representatives of the 48 Engineers Regiment, to receive updates on progress and challenges on the ground.
While significant efforts are being made to evacuate the accumulated waste, the Minister was briefed on challenges, particularly the volume of refuse at the transfer station and traffic congestion affecting operations.
Hon. Ayariga stressed the need to maximise the available working time and indicated that he would engage the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to explore practical traffic management measures that would allow the heavy-duty equipment and operators to work for longer periods.
The Minister commended the teams on the ground for their commitment and expressed optimism that the collaborative effort will result in the successful evacuation of the accumulated waste and the restoration of a cleaner and healthier environment in Agbogbloshie and its surrounding communities.
The work continues towards a cleaner, safer and healthier Accra.
