The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, has launched the NHIS Inter-School Quiz Competition and a nationwide sensitisation exercise to deepen second-cycle students’ knowledge of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The launch took place on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at the Kintampo Senior High School in the Bono East Region, marking the commencement of a nationwide engagement with selected Category A, B and C Senior High Schools across the country.
The initiative, spearheaded by the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) under the School Health Education Programme.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Bampoe said the initiative aimed to empower young people with knowledge of the NHIS, including its policies, operations, digital services, benefits, and beneficiary responsibilities.
He said students would also be sensitised on health services covered under the NHIS, primary healthcare, exemption policies and the categories of beneficiaries who qualify for exemptions.
Dr. Bampoe urged the students to actively participate in the programme and use the knowledge gained to promote health literacy in their homes and communities.
The Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Oswald Essuah-Mensah, said three schools from each of the 16 regions would participate in the quiz, bringing the total to 48 schools nationwide.
He said the competition would combine learning, interaction, and healthy competition while providing students with a deeper understanding of the NHIS.
Following the launch, a sensitisation team led by the Client Services Manager, Dr. Ruth Kukua Ntumy Coleman, visited selected schools as part of a phased one nationwide exercise. The first phase covered five schools in the Bono and Bono East regions: Our Lady Providence Girls SHS, Koase Senior High School, Akumfi Ameyaw SHS, Kintampo SHS, and Techiman SHS.
The exercise will continue in the Ahafo Region on Wednesday, September 30, with visits to OLA Girls SHS, Serwaa Kese SHS and Presbyterian SHS, followed by selected schools in the Ashanti Region on Friday, October 2.
The nationwide sensitisation exercise includes interactive question-and-answer sessions and mock quiz rounds, through which participating schools will form three-member teams for the competition. The roadmap will spotlight NHIS operations, digital registration on the MyNHIS App, and mobile renewal through *929#, NHIS Benefit Package, covered medical services, primary healthcare, and beneficiary exemption categories as key areas for the sensitisation.
The quiz is expected to progress from regional contests to inter-zonal rounds before culminating in a national grand finale and awards ceremony on November 26, 2026.
