The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, told Parliament that government has allocated additional spectrum to Mobile Network Operators to expand network capacity and improve service quality across the country.
Responding to questions on the floor of the House, the Minister said the move is aimed at reducing congestion and addressing persistent complaints of dropped calls and slow data speeds experienced by subscribers nationwide.
He further explained that the Quality of Service (QoS) obligations of the operators had been revised, while stricter monitoring and enforcement measures had been introduced to ensure better service delivery.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has also sought the support of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to facilitate access to land through Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for the construction of telecommunications towers.
Addressing challenges affecting telecommunications infrastructure, the Minister noted that proposed amendments to the NCA Act include punitive measures against individuals and entities responsible for the indiscriminate destruction of fiber optic cables.
On the Rural Telephony Project (RTP) at the Akumadam District, the Minister revealed that the Nkwanduano site is operational and passing traffic, while the Seseko site has been completed and operationalized but is currently down, with restoration efforts underway.
The Akumadan and Mankranso sites have been completed but are yet to be integrated and activated. He added that Dwenedabi, Brehoma, Antigua, Nyambekyere, Mpaepaamu and Nkwaankwaa have not yet been captured under the project.
However, a drive test exercise will be conducted to gather data for simulation, planning and future deployment and assure that all outstanding sites are completed before the end of 2026
