Parliament has commemorated African Women’s Day with a renewed call to promote gender equality and strengthen the role of women in sustainable development.
The call was made when Members of Parliament from both sides of the House made various comments on a statement by the Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Shirley Kyei on African Women Day observed by women Parliamentarians’ Caucus of the African Parliamentary Union (APU).
Speaking on the theme, “Women Securing Africa’s Water Future: Advancing Sustainable Sanitation and Water for Agenda 2063,” Hon. Kyei highlighted the important role women play in managing water resources and stressed the need to improve access to safe water and sanitation, particularly for women and girls in rural communities.
She also paid tribute to African women for their contributions to peace, democracy and socio-economic development, and urged Parliament and other stakeholders to continue supporting policies and reforms that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality across the continent.
