Two suspected armed robbers were killed in a shootout with police in Tema on Monday, following a daytime attack on a mobile money vendor at Community 5.
The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. when the suspects allegedly targeted a MoMo vendor operating at Aba Fosuah Plaza.
According to ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs at the Tema Regional Police Command, the attackers posed as customers seeking to withdraw cash.
One suspect, riding as a passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor to initiate a transaction. Police said that as the vendor reached for her phone, the suspect brandished a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash.
The vendor resisted, sparking a struggle with both the passenger and the rider.
During the scuffle, the armed suspect reportedly shot the vendor in the leg before the pair seized the bag and fled.
Officers from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, who were on routine patrol, responded to a distress call and pursued the suspects.
The statement said the fleeing men, on a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778, opened fire on officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel at Community 6.
Police returned fire, hitting both suspects and causing them to fall off the motorbike. They were rushed to the Police Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.
Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
A search of the suspects recovered a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a motorbike key, and GH¢11,390 in cash.
A spent cartridge was also retrieved from the robbery scene. Police added that a Ghana Card found on the suspects belonged to the victim.
The injured vendor is receiving treatment.
