President John Dramani Mahama has appointed former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, as Ghana’s Presidential Special Envoy for Reparations.

This was announced in a Facebook post by the former Regional Coordinator for Ghana School Feeding programme on Friday, 10th October, 2025.

The appointment shows President Mahama’s strong commitment to promoting justice and fairness for Africa and people of African descent around the world.

This appointment is part of the President’s “Reset Agenda,” which focuses on restoring honesty, equality, and effective leadership in Ghana’s local and international affairs. It also aims to strengthen Ghana’s image globally by promoting causes that benefit Africa as a whole.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah is one of Ghana’s most respected diplomats and public servants. He has served in several key government positions, including Minister of Communications, Minister of Education, and Minister of Trade and Industry. He was also Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States and the former Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO).

In his new role as the Presidential Special Envoy for Reparations, Dr. Spio-Garbrah will work closely with African countries, international organizations, and global partners to push for reparations for the injustices caused by slavery and colonialism.

His task is to ensure that the voices of Africans and their descendants are heard in global discussions about compensation and justice.

Many Ghanaians have congratulated Dr. Spio-Garbrah on his new role, describing the appointment as well-deserved. Supporters have praised his vast experience, leadership skills, and commitment to promoting Africa’s interests.

A message shared online read: “May heaven’s blessings guide him in this new role in support of President Mahama’s Reset Agenda.”

Dr. Spio-Garbrah’s appointment places Ghana at the forefront of the African reparations campaign, showing the country’s dedication to standing up for historical justice and fairness for all Africans.
