The Christian Council of Ghana has established a technical committee to chart a new path forward for the stalled National Cathedral project, with the group given one month to produce concrete recommendations.
The committee, comprising representatives from various Christian groupings, will examine critical issues including a practical funding model, the proposed location of the cathedral and other outstanding matters affecting the project.
Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, disclosed this after a closed-door meeting with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
He said the committee’s recommendations would be submitted to President John Mahama via the Sector Minister to inform the government’s decisions on the future of the project.
“Under this council, within a month, we will discuss issues relating to the practical intervention of funding, location and other things pertinent to the National Cathedral. So, we will within the month present the recommendations and expect the necessary decisions to be taken,” he said.
The Council also called for the expedited completion of the forensic audit into the National Cathedral project.
According to the Council, the audit findings are crucial to helping Christian leaders establish the facts surrounding the project, assess its current state and determine the most appropriate way forward.
The National Cathedral was announced in 2017 by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship and heritage centre.
The project was officially commissioned in 2018, followed by groundbreaking ceremonies in 2019. However, persistent funding and construction challenges have left the cathedral incomplete.
The delays have fuelled calls for greater transparency over the project’s financing, expenditure and future.
