Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has called on the Graduate Students’ Association of the University of Ghana (GRASA UG) to take an active interest in sports research as a vital tool for advancing sports development across the country.
During a recent meeting with the executive members of GRASA UG, Hon. Adams emphasized that research in sports disciplines and management is key to transforming the sports ecosystem. He highlighted the importance of building a comprehensive database for local teams and support bases to enhance performance and strategic planning.
One pressing issue discussed was the negative impact of the use of artificial turf, specifically AstroTurf, on athletes’ health and performance. Hon. Adams pointed out that comparative studies between artificial and natural turf are essential to inform safer and more effective sports infrastructure decisions.
The Minister also stressed the need to involve young people in the development of traditional recreational and sporting activities, aiming to elevate them to a level of national and international competitiveness. “We need to open up opportunities in the sports ecosystem, and young people must be at the forefront of this development,” he said.
He urged the Graduate Students’ Association to encourage athletes and young sports enthusiasts to take active roles in sports, emphasizing that engaging in sports fosters discipline, health, and community building.
Hon. Adams concluded by urging GRASA UG to take a leading role in promoting sports participation and research, which are crucial for the growth of Ghana’s sports industry.
