Ernest Henry Norgbey, MP for Ashaiman and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Youth and Sports joined Speaker Bagbin in welcoming the Sunderland AFC delegation led by owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus during their return visit to Ghana.

The visit follows a trip by a Parliamentary Delegation, including the Speaker of Parliament, to the United Kingdom in March 2026, where discussions were initiated to strengthen collaboration with Sunderland AFC. This return visit underscores the commitment of both parties to deepen a strategic partnership tied to the annual Democracy Cup initiative championed by the Speaker.

During the event, Hon. Norgbey expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the potential benefits for Ghana’s youth and sports sectors. He emphasized that the collaboration could open doors for sports development, youth empowerment, and economic opportunities.

Hon. Norgbey also acknowledged Sunderland AFC’s longstanding connection with Ghana, citing notable Ghanaian players like Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, and John Mensah, who have contributed significantly to the club’s history.

He assured that the Youth and Sports Committee would work closely with stakeholders to foster sports growth and youth welfare across Ghana. Additionally, Hon. Norgbey extended best wishes to the Black Stars for their preparations and participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kyril Louis-Dreyfus explained that the visit was in direct response to the Speaker’s earlier visit to the United Kingdom and the growing relationship between Sunderland AFC and Ghana.

He noted that Sunderland AFC has enjoyed a long-standing connection with Ghana through notable Ghanaian footballers such as Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and John Mensah, who made significant contributions during their time with the club.

“We have over the years developed strong connections with Ghana, and the time has come to institutionalize this relationship for the mutual benefit of both parties,” Mr. Louis-Dreyfus stated.

The Speaker of Parliament commended the Sunderland delegation for reciprocating the visit, describing it as a clear demonstration of the club’s commitment to building a lasting partnership with Ghana.

He emphasized that the visit extends beyond football, noting that the delegation would also explore opportunities within various sectors of the Ghanaian economy and identify potential areas for business cooperation and investment.

In a gesture of Ghanaian hospitality, the Speaker presented traditional fugu to each member of the Sunderland delegation, symbolizing cultural appreciation and fostering goodwill.
