An eyewitness to the fatal road crash at Ofankor has recounted how a series of collisions involving several vehicles resulted in a devastating pile-up on the road.
The eyewitness spoke to TV3’s Roland Walker, describing how the incident unfolded.
According to him, the crash began when a vehicle hit a motorcycle, throwing one of the occupants onto the road. The victim, he said, was found motionless and appeared to have died from the impact.
A police vehicle responding to an earlier incident subsequently arrived at the scene with its siren on. The police parked near the crash and began directing traffic, warning approaching motorists and guiding them around the wreckage.
However, the eyewitness said a trailer truck suddenly approached at high speed and crashed into the police vehicle from behind.
Another tipper truck that followed managed to brake and stop, but a white car subsequently crashed into its rear. A black car also crashed into the back of the tipper truck.
Moments later, another tipper truck reportedly rammed into the black car, pushing it underneath the yellow tipper truck and overturning it.
The eyewitness said the crashes continued as more vehicles approached the scene, creating a chain reaction involving several vehicles.
Among those reportedly involved were trailer trucks, tipper trucks, a tanker and private cars.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), which was at the scene, has confirmed that 11 people have died in the crash. Rescue and emergency response operations are ongoing at the scene.
